we are installing bamboo flooring- which direction to lay it?
it just arrived and now we need to decide which direction to lay it, upon entering the front door should it lay across- or horizontal, or vertically - going back into the living room... any advice or
guidance? or perhaps diagonally... ?
I doesn't matter which way the floor joists run if there's already a subfloor or you're laying it over an existing floor. However, it's generally recommended that you lay another floor at right angles to any floor boards already there--with idea that you wouldn't wan the joints on each layer to be parallel with one another to avoid having cracks land right over another..
But aren't you putting down an underlayment (thin foam sheet) with engineered flooring anyway? Then I'd say lay the floor according to the effect you want to create in the room:
make it look longer/narrower by laying in the same direction as the predominant view
shorter/wider by laying across the predominat view
A room can llok larger overall if it's laid diagonally, and you can direct the eye toward or away from a part of the room depending upon the direction of the diagonal.
