Removing Slate tiles.?
Last night we started and it took 6 hrs to remove 8sq ms and we still have about 40 sq mts to go,so is there someone out there that knows the trick to getting rid of these horrible things or is there a way to either paint,seamless floor covering or something over them.I would either like the end result to be vinyl or cork tiles,please help,Thanks,regards Tanya.
Ouch, good luck. My husband tried to save money and remove ceramic tile (about 20 years old) and seriously injured his shoulder. It took him several days to remove just the tile in our entry way, and we had a hall, kitchen, bathroom etc. to do. He stopped and let the (new tile) installers remove the old tile and they finished the job in just a couple of hours. They used just a chisel etc..., but you can rent a special small jack-hammer type of thing just for this.
No one could get all of the old cement/adhesive out, so we just laid the new tile over the old surface. It's not how the more expensive installers wanted us to do, and that would have take a week more to remove the cement/adhesive. But we went ahead and just installed over it and the new layer only raised everything about 1/8".
So far it's wonderful! The right installers can do wonders.
But yes, on the TV shows they often just go over the old tiles as long as you pull up anything loose first. If you have some areas of tile pulled out and some not, just make sure to fill in those gaps with extra adhesive or a board material of some sort.
