I moved into a house where the previous owner had five cocker spaniels and they left all kinds of black spots on the hardwood floors. We had to take out the saturated carpets and vinyl and that's when we discovered the damage.
I read about this tip where you slather a very thick layer of Miracle Whip on top of the spot and cover it with a laundry basket or box and let it set up for a few days. Supposedly the black stuff gets lifted off when you wash off the spread.
I tried it on a huge spot in the dining room but the damage was so deep that it didn't work very well. I did notice that it lightened the stain a bit though. Plus I'd used painter's tape to secure the box and it lifted the varnish off the floor, so I actually caused more damage. This stain was probably at least five years old by the time I treated it, and you may have better luck on a fresh one.
If that doesn't work, then I'm sorry to say that sanding probably wouldn't work either, because the stain will be too far down into the wood. You'd have to have that section replaced by a professional so they can match it up.
We're going to paint a layer or two of Kilz primer-sealer over the spots and then install wall-to-wall carpet or laminate flooring.

Possible to repair nail holes in hardwood floor?
Just bought a home and somewhere along the homes life, someone decided to put carpet over the hardwood floors in the two bedrooms. Unfortunately, this results in nails and staples everywhere into the wood flooring.
Id love to ditch the carpet as I like the look of hardwood floors better. However, the damage seems to have been done to the wood flooring. Is there any way to repair? Ive never laid carpet, but is it normal to use so many nails and staples? Im sure im not the first to want to rip up carpet and expose a hardwood floor; are there ways to do this without literally re-doing the wooden floors?
