flooring plank Frequently Asked Questions
Has anyone tried to install the Trafficmaster Allure plank flooring in an old camper?
I have a 1971 travel trailer/camper with some fantastic brown and orange shag carpet that the previous ownder installed. Underneath is old vinyl flooring that I don't want to mess with. Anyone know if it would be okay to install the new Trafficmaster Allure faux wood plank, resilient flooring in the camper? I installed it in my bathroom at home and think it would be great in a camper, but I don't want to spend the money if it isn't a feasible idea. Any help (or experience) would be appreciated! Thanks!
I think your suggestion is a superb one. I installed a similar flooring system in my '73 VW and it works an absolute treat!!
We bought a house several years ago with beautiful plank wood floors.?
Two years later, we rescued a Lab mix puppy. She has destroyed our wood floors with her toenails. It's not her fault, she just slips and slides all over them. The wood planks are an uneven finish (rustic look), with an oak sort of stain. What is the best way to repair the floors and get a finish on that will protect the wood from future scratches? I had a guy come out who sadly told me that it would cost $4000. to refinish the downstairs floor. Needless to say, we are doing it ourselves. I will invest in Softpaws for my dog, but I still need to rescue my floor. Any info. re the processes or products to use would be most appreciated!
The type of old plank flooring I believe you are talking about just can't be sanded down with the floor sanders. You can buy a cheap hand orbital hand sander and smooth the floors a bit. Start with a low grit, then work your way up to a high grit (probably start at a 60 grit, then 80, 100, then 150). Vacuum between each sanding. Make sure all of the dust is gone before putting on the poly. If you use stain, you will need to match the old color as closely as possible, as you probably haven't gotten rid of all of the old poly and it won't sink into those areas. I use Varthane poly, which you get at Lowes or a paint shop, but use whatever type you prefer.
In some situations I have used an edger (from any rental shop) to preserve old floors which did not lend themselves to the big push type sanders. This option lets you sand without completely leveling the floor, and it completely removes the poly and stain so that you can start with a fresh surface.
Good luck
