hardwood floor scratch repair Frequently Asked Questions

How to repair scratched hardwood floor?

I rent an apartment with hardwood floors through out and I have a problem with a spot in front of the computer desk where my chair is. The wheels on the chair have scuffed or scratched the wood underneath to a lighter color and there are a couple of spots that look like the top of the wood has come off. When I clean it with water the color returns but then fades again once dry.

Is there an easy way to fix this problem, like an oil or something? Thanks

Hi there. Sounds like you have worn away some of the finish on the floor. Theres a product called DEFT it comes in spray can form and also brush on form, you can purchase it at home depot or any hardware store(5-12.00). The brush on form would be harder so i recomend it. Take a little sand paper(320-400grit) lightly sand the area so that the finish will meld into the existing finish. Take a .99 cent paint brush and apply a lite coat it drys fast so about 20 mins later apply another coat, let dry for about 30 mins to an hour lightly sand it again then apply 1 more coat. Give it 4-6hrs to dry and your good as new. Maybe get one of those mats to lay down to roll your chair on so you dont scuff it up. Hope this helps. If the stain doesnt come back...you can get a stain chart from home depot for Minwax stains. Just match it to the color of your floor apply a little stain to the area and let dry a few hrs. Continue the steps above with the Deft.

What type of flooring should I put in my new home?

I am buying a new home (my first house!). It is a foreclosed home so when the utilities were turned on I guess a pipe broke and flooded the entire house. I will now have the bank hire a contractor to repair the damages and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what type of flooring/repairs I should request.
I have a 2 year-old, a dog and a cat. I know hardwood looks nice and adds value, but I am worried about the maintenance and harness in case of falls. However, my cat scratches on carpet and it is difficult to clean. Is tile too hard also? Should I recarpet the bedrooms and leave the other areas hardwood? What about the stairs?
Thanks!
Thanks for all your feedback so far! I am going to go with the less-expensive options, so I think I will mainly look into laminate flooring and carpet. We are going to have to redo some of the walls and subflooring, etc. and possibly the entire kitchen too. So whever I can save will help.

Bamboo flooring or cork flooring is a bit softer. Hardwood is a lot of work- look into Pergo flooring if you like the look of hardwood but not the maintenance. It's very durable and can be installed quickly and even the cheaper brands are nice.

You can look at linoleum rolls for the kitchen and bathrooms. It's not nearly as nice as tile, but tends to be a lot softer and will hold up to the abuse of kids and animals.

You're lucky to have the bank replacing the flooring in a foreclosed home- most of the time they say tough luck, that's your problem.

Carpet is always good for bedrooms, close the doors and keep the cat out.
