install bamboo floors Frequently Asked Questions
Can bamboo flooring be install over a concrete sub floor if so how?
I am assuming you use whole bamboo and not the split ones.
If whole, make sure your concrete has 1 x 2 struts. Lay bamboo in a pattern if you wish. Nails should be galvanized. Otherwise, definitely rust will set in and it will look ugly after sometime. Good drainage is the key, without that it will form mold.
Do you wish to remove the floors periodically? Then, make 4ft x 4ft grids (1"x2" wood frames) of the bamboo and lay them in pattern over the concrete 1x2 struts. I personally like 45 degree zig zag. That's a personal preference. Tight fitting, exact measurements is important. When you want to remove for a water wash up in future, it is easy.
Will there be too much human traffic on this floor? Then whole bamboo has strength. The split kind will give trouble over time.
Caution: Deburr the ends of the bamboo and finish with urethane. Paint the concrete floor (after acid wash) for good adhesion and to prevent moisture heaving.
Do not let children play in this area. Splinters, especially from bamboo can be very painful. The microscopic hooks can imbed in the skin and are very difficult to remove.
Good luck.
Can you help me with my floors?
I have just installed Bamboo flooring which doesn't have a finish and I am having a hard time finding a cleaner for it. I bought Murphy's oil soap and it cleans it but doesn't do any shine. I also bought mop and glo but that left a bad residue on the floor. Does anyone have any recommendations?
You will probably need to put some type of polyurethane finish on the floor - if there is any discoloration from water, you could stain it first. Just make sure it's dry before you finish it. Also, look for water-based, low (or no) VOC products - they are better for your health.
Check with the manufacture on specifics for cleaning.
