how to install wood floor over concrete?
There are many ways to lay your new wooden floor on your existing concrete. you need to get the barrier coverings that comes with your new floor. there are foam to rubber padding's to resins to create a level surface. If your existing floor is really bad, you can float the floor first using concrete filler. Using levels, laser's etc. can make for a great floor but it's a pain in the a** and you really don't need to. the best advise I can give you is to talk to the floor manufacture and ask them what would be the best way for your application and existing floor. For best results, chalk out the room and find the center and work out from the center leaving your smaller and off cuts on the edges so your new molding will cover it up and look natural and like the rest of the floor. i want wood flooring?
in my house...what would be cheaper if i go to home depot and have they install it for me? or is it cheaper if i buy raw wood, and cut the wood myself and install it?
You are talking about two different products. Manufactured wood flooring is kiln-dried, sanded, and routed on the edge for a proper fit board-to-board. Raw wood, unless you have a wood shop and can route and plane, will look like outdoor decking on your floor. The seams will never be what you want for an interior application.
If you have the skills, why don't you just buy the manufactured wood flooring and install it yourself? Then you can sand it and stain it and seal it the way you want.
