installing flooring Frequently Asked Questions
What is involved in installing unfinished flooring on plywood. And How difficult is it to do.?
1.They make a interlocking slat type flooring now that involves putting down a certain type of 'sheet' and then 'popping' them together like lego bricks. The last part of the job, that might be problimatic, is cutting and shimming the farthest wall from where you started.
2. The old way is actually a little harder...involves nailing the 'slats' to the floor and is much the same. Then wood filling all the holes, minor sanding, several coats of varnish....
I suggest the first....with a finished product to begin with.
And also, It can be removed and reused. In both of the above examples the 'kick guard' or baseboard should be removed.
installing vinyl flooring?
so i bought a mobile home with an added on part and in the added on living room they have vinyl squares laid down but some of the squares are peeling and some have come completly off. i would like to install 4" x 36" vinyl planks. they have the vinyl squares instaled right over the plywood floor. is that the right way to do it? do i need to lay anything inbetween the plywood and vinyl planks? i just want to get it right so the floor i put down dosnt start coming up like this floor
If your question is what is the right thing to have under a vinyl floor, any hard smooth surface will do. Smooth is very important, because any irregularities in the floor will show through eventually. You could probably leave the old vinyl tiles there, as long as you use a levelling compound to fill in any low spots where bits of tile have come off, or any texture in the tiles. If the vinyl planks you're installing are the ones I think they are, the ones that stick to each other but not to the floor, the surface they go on doesn't need to be suitable for an adhesive. It just needs to be very clean. Keep a vacuum cleaner handy and clean before each plank goes down. Any little lumps of anything will show through. If it's another kind of vinyl plank that glues to the floor, check the instructions on them or ask at the place you're buying them before you proceed to find out what surface they need. If they do stick to the floor, you'll need a clean solid very flat surface. I'd recommend the ones that stick to themselves. They don't stick to the floor so they can't come loose from it. I have them and like them a lot, they're from Home Depot.
