installing wood floors Frequently Asked Questions

Installing Wood Floors?

I went to the H.Depot and saw a class where they installed Tile. It looked really easy. So now I am wondering about wood floors. How hard is it to install. It looks like there could be some reall work involved...but I'd like to save money and do it myself.

I'll take floor covering for $400 please, Alex.

The difficulty varies depending on what type of wood floor you are installing. Snap lock laminate are pretty easy, nail down hardwood more difficult. The hardest part of either floor is cutting through doorways, such as from a bedroom into a closet. With the laminate, level your floor if necessary, roll out the padding, then you are ready to lay flooring. Make sure you leave a 1/4" gap all the way around the walls. The floor "floats", and it will expand and contract. When you cut a piece to finish a row, use the cutoff piece to start your next row. Offset your joints by 12" or so from row to row. After you finish, install shoe moulding to cover the 1/4" gap.

Hardwoods need to be nailed down. You must be sure to tap them tight to avoid gaps. Again, you want to make sure to offset joints, a minimum of 2x the width of the planks. When you finish the installation, again install shoe to cover the gap.

With either type of flooring, be sure to let the wood sit for a week in the room where it will be installed. This will allow the floor to "acclimate", which will reduce gaps and buckling. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any more questions.

Where can I buy laminate flooring on Oahu, Hawaii?

I've been to Home Depot and Lowes already, and by some freakish coincidence they don't have it. I'm looking for a fairly inexpensive light-colored wood laminate flooring. I want to install it myself, though. Are there any stores that carry that besides the ones mentioned?

There are home decor magazines you can pick up at HomeWorld (furniture store in Pearl City) near the customer service department or in real estate offices. The magazines offer listings of these types of services or distributors that are an alternative to Lowes and Home Depot. Good luck!!
