polyurethane on a "wood" laminate floor??
I am putting down a Fake wood laminate floating floor on my concrete floor in the basement. Can I put polyurethane after installation to protect from water.
I wouldn't becuase most of them are treated to be water resistant and the polyurethan may not adhere to the already slick/smoth surface of the laminte. Also, it could wind up looking super shiny and could be harder to clean in general. One of the nice things about the floating laminate floors is that if a board gets damaged you can pop off your wall base, pull up some planks, and replace the damaged piece. If you seal the top, you wouldn't have that option!
How far can $5000 go to update a kitchen?
My husband and I just bought a house in Herndon, Va. The house was built in 1983, and I think EVERYTHING is original to the house. The kitchen has never been updated. The shelves inside bow towards the middle and the toe kick on the bottom of the shelves and the island are missing pieces. Overall it looks totally ugly. I think the cabinets are cheap laminate and particle board although I am not 100% certain of this. I like the layout, so we don't need a renovation, but I would like to replace the cabinets, put down laminate flooring and replace the countertops with something affordable/durable. Do you think this is possible with a $5000 budget (including installation? Our kitchen size is pretty small. I'd say 10x10, or slightly bigger. The only appliance we plan on upgrading is the dishwasher. What do you think? Thanks.
Cabinets are the most expensive part of a kitchen, try home depot or lowes they have pre-fab wooden cabinets that you would just have to stain or paint yourself, this will save you tons of money. If you choose a laminate or if youre really brave and do a concrete countertop those would be the most inexpensive way to go. Laminate flooring is cheap so no worries there, you can also buy bamboo flooring(sometimes its less than laminate, and it looks great!!!) a dishwasher only will run you 300-600 dollars. I'm not sure if you could do this for $5000 if you end up doing a lot of DIY and not have to pay for installation its possible. When you purchase a appliance the companies usually install those for free.
