refinish hardwood floors Frequently Asked Questions
Has anyone ever used Olympic stain premium one step to refinish their hardwood floors?
Stay away from "one step" finishes on hardwood floors. If you're taking the old floor down to bare wood, your best bet is to stain (separately) and then coat with three to five layers of an appropriate water borne or oil-based polyurethane.
Is there anything I can do to make hardwood floors look good (or at least better) short of sanding/refinishing
I'm moving into a house I'll be renting (possibly to buy in the near future), and the hardwood floors could be nice, but they're awful! If I buy the house, I'll have something serious done to them, but right now I'd just like to make them look better. Does anyone know of some sort of cleaner or anything else that I could use with minimal invasiveness (since it's not my house) that would make them look better? (There are black stains on parts, they're not shiny, and they're just basically a mess. Apparently, previous tenants really did a number on these pretty floors.)
Thanks!
For goodness sake's please disregard "pink" suggestion of painting the hardwood floors. Besides guaranteeing never receiving your deposit back you could possibly ruin your hardwood flooring. The paint will never come out of the cracks and should you have them refinished in the future, flooring companies will generally charge you double due to the paint removal.
If you just want to clean them up prior to moving in use 1 cup of vinegar to a gallon of warm water and mop them. If you do not plan on buffing and re coating them in the future (it appears they would need a sand and refinish anyway) any commercially available wax will give them a shine and make them look more presentable.
You would be amazed how some carefully placed furniture and throw rugs will cover those unsightly black marks (keep in mind they may not come out even with a total sand and refinish) and the general poor condition of your flooring. Good Luck!^
