Plumbing question- new toilet wobbles?
I just bought a toilet and had a handyman install.
It wobbles.
He said it is because the tile floor below is not level. Our old toilet, however- did not wobble.
He said give it a week to see if it sets in.
What's really going on? Did I get a crappy installation?
How do I fix this?
Without actually looking at the problem it's hard to say exactly what is causing the problem. It can fix be fixed though. I can give you a list of things to check that may be causing the problem. First, does the new toilet sit on top of the tile? Toilets have different base sizes that sit on the floor. It it looks like that is not the problem, the the cause of the problem is under the toilet. You will need to pull the toilet and do some investigating. What you should find under the toilet is a toilet flange in the in the floor that is connected to the sewer pipe. It should be fastened to the floor with screws and should be secure. Usually there are two bolts that come up from the toilet flange. They are used to secure your toilet to the flange and the floor. The flange has slots in it where the bolts are so you can remove and replace them if needed. Between the toilet and the flange there should be a toilet seal to block water and sewer gases from leaking into your bathroom. There are a couple of different kinds. One is simply a round ring made of wax and others have a plastic ring attached to the wax that sits down in the toilet flange. In cold weather these can be very hard and may not allow your toilet to set completely on the floor. That could be why you where told to wait to give your toilet seal time to soften and allow your toilet to settle down on the seal. You still should snug the toilet bolts back up after the toilet settles on the seal. Maybe the old seal wasn't removed before the new one was installed . The toilet flange may be broken of rusted out and need replacing .
