tile flooring installation Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to remove old baseboards which lay below the existing tile flooring?
I am looking for the most efficient technique to remove old baseboards which lie below the tile line.
I would like to install new baseboards that are 5" tall and have them lay on my tile and carpeting. Do you recommend this technique of installation?
To remove the old molding you'll need a hammer and a good prybar/flatbar. Look for these at the hardware store/home center; I'd suggest several sizes, including a cats-paw (I like the Estwing Proclaw 250). They're cheap, and you might be more comfortable with one over another.
If the base is painted/caulked to the wall, first cut along the top of the base with a SHARP utility knife to free the molding and avoid wallboard damage. Next tap the blade portion of the pry bar between the wall and base. If you leverage against the wall, place a thin piece of wood behind the prybar to avoid wall damage(or pry against a spot you know is backed by a stud). Once you get the piece going it's pretty easy, but expect to make a lot of toothpicks!
A note of caution- be careful if the tile is very close to the base; if the base is angle-nailed into the soleplate(likely), prying will require a combination of brute force and finesse to avoid popping tiles.
New base, especially if you also use shoe molding, will work nicely and cover a lot of tilework discrepancies. With carpet, shoe molding won't be needed.
Good luck!
PS The inevitable trim nails left in the wall are sometimes easier to drive completely into the wall than remove.
This is my first tile installation, a little help?
Hi, I just weent to Lowes and bought these supplies:
12x12 Tiles
50LB Bags of Ultraflex 1 Mortar
25LB Bags Of Keroflex Grout (Can't remember name, but same company as Ultraflex)
1x4 x 1x4 Trowel
Grout Rubber Float
Grout Sealer
3x16 Tile Spacers
Now I am doing this installation on a concrete floor. Can s1 give me a step by step guide on how to install the tiles? I see guides but I don't have sme of the things that they require and am getting mixed up. Am I missing anything?
Thanks for all of your help
